(July 6, 2018) National Park Service and Natural Resources Police confirmed the body of an unidentified individual was recovered off the coast of the Assateague National Seashore Wednesday night.
The medical examiner’s office in Baltimore is investigating the cause of death, but officials are treating the incident as a drowning for the time being.
Assateague Island National Seashore Director Debbie Darden said a 9-1-1 call was placed around 6:40 p.m. on July 4, reporting an individual facedown in the water in the north beach area.
Natural Resources Police were able to recover the body about an hour later, and custody of the remains was transferred to the Ocean City Fire Department’s vessel shortly thereafter, Candy Thompson, NRP spokeswoman said.
Details on the victim are few, since the next of kin has not yet been notified, Darden said.
More information is expected to be released in the next few days, she said.
