A 33-year-old man from Pennsylvania died on Friday night after getting caught up in a rip current in Ocean City.

Personnel from both the Ocean City Police and Fire departments responded to 19th Street at approximately 8:40 p.m. on Friday after receiving reports that four swimmers were in distress.

Chatter heard on the scanner radio between emergency workers noted that two of the swimmers were nearly 100 yards from shore.

One of the swimmers, a 33-year-old man from Pennsylvania, became distressed while he was in the current.

Bystanders along the beach entered the water to assist and pull the man from the ocean, and CPR was administered by EMS workers.

The man was transported to Tidal Health Peninsula Regional Hospital in Salisbury, where he was ultimately pronounced dead.

Police have not released the name of the victim.
