(May 7, 2021) The Worcester Prep boys’ lacrosse team earned a 13-8 victory over Sussex Academy on the road in Delaware on Monday.
Worcester led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.
“The kids played a very good game. We were dominating the first quarter, but could not put the ball on cage,” said Prep Coach Drew Haugh. “We must of had 10 shots with nothing to show for it. We finally got on track and scored two goals. They put one in to make it 2-1, then we answered to make it 3-1.”
Sussex made it 3-2, before Worcester went on a six-goal run. At halftime, the Mallards were ahead, 9-2. After three quarters, the visiting Prep squad held an 11-5 advantage.
“Our defense played a very good game. Our man-down [defense] really put the lid on there extra-man offense,” Haugh said. “We had a two-minute penalty, which our man-down defense was able to stop. Our goalie was a big part of the penalty kill.”
Senior captain Hunter Gentry recorded 15 saves in goal for Worcester.
“As usual, Hunter Gentry had a great game, making 15 saves and thwarting any chance of Sussex Academy making a run,” Haugh said. “We knew Sussex Academy was undefeated, and we went there with the thought of taking away their undefeated season. Mission accomplished.”
Senior John Arrington and junior Austin Airey scored three goals each.
“John Arrington had a nice game with three goals. Austin Airey released his cannon three times for three goals,” Haugh said. “Austin can bring the heat with his right and left hand. He can shoot the lights out from outside, and traditionally shoots it high and hard. Not many goalies can make the save when he pulls the trigger.”
Senior captain Graham McColgan chipped in with three goals and an assist. Senior Brugh Moore contributed two goals and two assists. Senior Mason Brown and sophomore Jack Gardner scored one goal and had an assist each.
