(March 12, 2021) The Stephen Decatur boys’ soccer team kicked off the season with two victories.
Last Friday the Seahawks edged out the James M. Bennett Clippers, 1-0. Sophomore Gabe Geiser netted the lone goal for the Berlin squad 31 minutes into the game.
“After the first 10-15 minutes, we picked up the pace relatively quickly,” said Coach Jamie Greenwood. “We were knocking the rust off. It was their first competitive game since last October. It was a good game. We played well.”
Junior Aeddan Jones recorded five saves for Decatur.
Decatur took a trip to Salisbury on Monday to face the Wicomico Indians. The Seahawks shut out their opponent, 5-0.
Junior Miguel Cervantes gave Decatur a one-goal advantage 28 minutes into the first half.
Goals in the second half were scored by seniors Tiernan Weinstein and Emmanuel Aroh (two goals) and junior Ryan Sweeney.
Jones stopped four Wicomico shots.
“We were slow getting started after a long weekend off and no practice between Bennett and this game. There was not a whole lot of time to chat about what we needed to work on,” Greenwood said. “It’s early in the season and we’re working the kinks out. When we scored the second goalie we started to roll from there.”
Decatur will battle the Mardela Warriors in Mardela Springs on Monday at 4 p.m. The Seahawks will then host the Crisfield Crabbers at 4 p.m. on Wednesday.
