(Oct. 15, 2021) The Stephen Decatur golf team captured the Bayside Conference championship title by one stroke over Kent Island last Thursday at Queenstown Golf Course.
Decatur, the top team of the Bayside South, edged out Kent Island, the No. 1 North Bayside squad, 338-339.
“The team played extremely well today on a great course. They continue to rise to the competition and are playing really solid …,” Decatur Coach Dan Stearman said.
Decatur was led by sophomores Evan Oglesby and Kole Kohut, who both shot 78s. Senior captains Jacob Bauer tallied an 88 and Abby Wesche carded a 94.
“The first group with Kole and Evan came in with a pretty big lead, and their second group played great and caught us. Jacob Bauer needed to make par on the last hole to secure the win and he did just that,” Stearman said. “The kids played really smart golf throughout the day, they stayed away from double and triple bogey and played great team golf.”
All 18 of the Bayside Conference schools competed in the District VIII tournament on Wednesday at Hyatt River Marsh in Cambridge.
Decatur came in second place, two strokes behind Kent Island, 330-328.
“All five of my players will be going to states based on their scores and the team score. They all played great today I was very proud of all of them,” Stearman said Wednesday night. “They competed against some really good golfers today on a course they don’t normally play and they did everything I asked of them.”
Kohut (80), Oglesby (82), Bauer (83) and freshman Sam Boger (85) contributed to the team score. The foursome will compete together at states, Oct. 25-27, at University of Maryland College Park. Wesche shot a 91, which qualified her as an individual for states.
