(Oct. 1, 2021) The Stephen Decatur golf team jumped to 10-0 on Tuesday with one match remaining before post-season competition.

Before improving to 10 wins, Decatur earned No. 9 last Thursday at Eagles Landing Golf Course in Berlin.

Playing in difficult weather with rain on and off during the match, the Seahawks battled the elements and scored a 161 in the seven-school match.

Decatur was led by medalist, sophomore Kole Kohut, who carded a 37. Sophomores Evan Oglesby (41) and AJ Kolb (44) and freshman Clayton McCabe (45) also contributed to the win.

“The team played really well considering the conditions. It showed great poise, the entire team,” said Decatur Coach Dan Stearman. “Golfers are tough.”

Parkside took second with a 174 and James M. Bennett came in third (189).

The seven schools gathered at Green Hill Yacht & Country Club in Quantico, Maryland, on Tuesday.

Decatur led the field with a score of 170, followed by Bennett (184) and Parkside (207).

Kohut earned medalist honors, shooting a 38. Oglesby (41), senior captain Jacob Bauer (43) and Sam Boger (48) also contributed to the win.

“Overall we played pretty good today on a course that we don’t play often. The team continues to post solid scores … We need to continue to work on getting ready for district and states,” Stearman said.

Decatur was scheduled to wrap up regular-season play yesterday, Thursday.

The Bayside Conference championship is Oct. 7 at the Queenstown Golf Links beginning at 10:30 a.m.

Decatur earned the top spot in the Bayside South.

“It’s a very close race,” between three Bayside North teams –  Kent Island, Easton and North Caroline, Stearman said.

“We need to not make a big number trying to do too much and play within ourselves, and most importantly, not be overwhelmed by the opportunity,” he added.

All of the Bayside teams will then compete in the District VIII tournament at Hyatt River Marsh, beginning at noon on Oct. 13.
