(Oct. 29, 2021) The Worcester Prep boys’ cross county team came in second place in the Eastern Shore Independent Athletic Conference championship meet, while the girls’ squad finished in third last Wednesday in Salisbury.
“I thought they ran well overall,” said Prep Coach John Zirckel. “It was a good way to end. I was happy with it.”
A number of Prep runners recorded their fastest times of the season in the conference meet.
Gunston won the boys’ competition with 36 points. Worcester scored 45, followed by Delmarva Christian (61) and Salisbury School (82).
Scoring points for Worcester were: senior Nick Hearne (seventh, 20:28.5), sophomore Dylan Simons (eighth, 20:37.4), and juniors Cooper Ludt (ninth, 20:40.4), Riley Moyer (10th, 20:58.9) and Rory Pugh (11th, 21:05.7).
“Four ran in the 20s, and Nick earned All-Conference honorable mention,” Zirckel said. “He deserves it. He’s been our best runner consistently.”
The Salisbury School won the girls’ competition with 17 points. Delmarva Christian took second with 26 points, followed by Worcester with 41.
Junior Caitlyn Hoen (third, 24:52.4), freshman Aurora Holland (11th, 27:22), sophomore Madilyn Nechay (13th, 28:39.1) and senior Sydney Lamson-Reich (14th, 29:04.6) scored points for Worcester.
Hoen earned a spot on the All-ESIAC team for her performance.
“Caitlyn has been the best girl runner for us this season. It was her second fastest time of the season,” Zirckel said. “At the two-mile mark coming out of the woods she was in first place. She tries hard every time.”
The program will graduate four runners - Hearne, Lamson-Reich, Hugh Thomas Cropper and Graham McCabe.
Zirckel said if the returning runners train in the offseason the program will be even stronger next year.
Zirckel enjoyed his first season as head coach.
“The kids were all great, helpful and polite, and they were all different too,” he said. “They’re really great kids. I had a lot of fun. It was fun to help them get better.
“The parents were also helpful and very supportive [in addition to] the staff at Worcester Prep,” he added.
