(Oct. 30, 2020) Even though the Worcester Prep volleyball team didn’t earn a victory over the Delmarva Christian Royals last Friday in Berlin, the girls finished the season playing their best.

“I was very impressed. Because despite the fact we didn’t get much playing time with games, they ended the season with a bang,” said Prep Coach Cheryl Brown. “We’ve never been able to get that many points against them. They gave 100 percent. There’s nothing more we can ask.”

The Royals won, 25-20, 25-13 and 25-19.

Leading the Mallards was senior captain CC Lizas who recorded six digs, three kills and two assists. Freshman Natasha Richter had six digs and two kills and senior Sophia Ludt chipped in with 18 digs and one ace. Senior Bryn Elliott had one block and three kills.

“You practice and practice and don’t know what the outcome will be and we saw Friday that hard work did pay off,” Brown said. “There were a lot of rallies, a lot of points they weren’t ready to give up. Their perseverance was astounding.”

The team had one scrimmage and only three matches this season because of covid-19.

“I think the season went much better than we expected it to go back in August,” Brown said. “The girls were happy to get out there and play.”

Assistant Coach Jim Jung kept stats throughout the season during practices, so the coaching staff could see specifically where each player improved.

Brown finished the season with 18 players on her roster. The team will graduate five, many of whom played a majority of the time.
