(March 19, 2021) The Stephen Decatur boys’ cross country team won its three-school season opener last Wednesday in Berlin.
“I thought we ran OK. It was really good just to be back out there and competing,” said Decatur Coach Jody Stigler. “I am hoping that we have set a baseline and we will be looking to improve upon these times in future meets. Standout performers were probably Mary [Mergott] and Tristan [Dutton].”
The Decatur boys’ squad scored 28 points in the victory. James M. Bennett came is second place with 41 and Snow Hill took third with 55 points.
Leading the team was Dutton, a junior, who came in second overall (18:29.3).
Also scoring points for Decatur were senior Liam Foley (fourth, 19:15.9), juniors Sam Woodley (fifth, 19:29.4), Gavin McCabe (seventh, 19:57.2) and Raul Gault (10th, 21:04.4).
Bennett won the girls’ competition, with 23 points. Decatur came in second with 32.
Leading the Seahawks was Mergott, a senior, who crossed the finish line first overall (22:27.1). Rounding out the top five were sophomore Mackenzie Cathell (sixth, 25:35.7), senior Avery Braciszewski (seventh, 26:26.1), junior Amalia Murphy (eighth, 26:26.7) and sophomore Ava Becnel (10th, 31:15.7).
The next meet is Wednesday, March 24 at 4 p.m. in Berlin.
