Decatur’s cross country teams hosted the inaugural Homecoming 5K relay last Saturday in Berlin. A total of 31 runners participated, including students, families and parents.

(Oct. 29, 2021) The Stephen Decatur cross country teams finished the regular season with wins during the three-school meet last Wednesday on their home course in Berlin.

“I am very happy with the results of our last regular-season meet,” said Decatur Coach Brenda Hommel. “Both teams continue to remain dedicated and willing to work hard to finish out the season. Hopefully they will run strong and we will see most of our runners PR at the Bayside Championship meet on [Oct. 27].”

Snow Hill, Pocomoke and Decatur participated in the Oct. 20 meet.

The only female runners in the race were from Decatur. The top five scored points. Crossing the finish line first through fifth, respectively, were: freshman Amber Marshall (25:29), sophomore Macy Woroniecki (26:32), freshman Clarice Piela (28:42), senior Avery Braciszewski (29:28) and junior Ava Becnel (33:10).

Freshmen Chloe Resnick (34:07) and Daniela Gonzalez (34:12) also raced.

“Our girls’ team finished with a perfect season, winning every conference meet,” Hommel said. “Although they had no other girls competing against them at this meet, they did come together as a team to make sure that at least five girls ran and finished the race despite multiple injuries on the girls’ team this season.”

The Decatur boys’ team scored 24 points in the victory. Snow Hill came in second place with 40 points, followed by Pocomoke with 69.

Scoring points for Decatur were: senior Tristan Dutton (first, 19:06), sophomore Ethan Justice (second, 19:06.90), senior Gavin McCabe (sixth, 20:35), sophomore Reid Caimi (seventh, 21:20) and freshman Luke Braciszewski (eighth, 21:34).

“The boys’ team finally earned their first-place finish. Snow Hill has a strong boys’ team and has almost beat us in previous meets so our boys needed to stay focused at this meet since every point made a difference,” Hommel said. “Ethan Justice and Reid Caimi especially stepped up to improve their place compared to previous meets to seal a victory for their team.”

Decatur’s cross country teams hosted the inaugural Homecoming 5K relay last Saturday in Berlin. It was open to anyone as part of the Decatur Homecoming Week activities.

The race was run relay style where teams of up to five members took turns running five legs of a 1K course. A total of 31 runners participated and included students, families and parents.

“Overall we were very happy with the turnout for our first year of the event,” Hommel said. “The winning teams made up of students from the same graduating class will become legacies of the school as they will have their names added to a banner to hang in the gym as the first record keepers of the race.”

This year’s winning boys’ team was from the senior class of 2022 and included Dutton, McCabe, Jake Gillespie, Justin Hicks and Luke Bahlman with a time of 19:02.

The winning girls’ team was made up of two juniors – Carolina Novelli and Mackenzie Cathell. They finished the 5K in 23:17.
