(June 4, 2021) The Stephen Decatur track and field teams both won last Wednesday’s three-school meet in Berlin.
“Overall, I think that we did pretty well. It was pretty hot and windy, which I think affected performances a little bit, especially in the sprints,” said Decatur Coach Jody Stigler. “We are getting some improving performances, which is encouraging. Our meet [Friday] is at Bennett and then we will be moving into the qualifying meets for the state championship, so hopefully everyone continues to improve.”
Decatur’s girls’ team scored 81 points. Mardela finished in second place with 39 points, and Pocomoke came in third with 18.
Lady Seahawks who won their individual events were: sophomores Carolina Novelli (800-meter run, 2:53.91; 1,600-meter run, 6:22.01) and Summer Brenner (110-meter hurdles, 19.86 seconds; 300-meter hurdles, 1:02.63), junior Amalia Murphy (3,200-meter run, 15:45.76) and senior Jessica Janney (high jump, 4 feet 8 inches; long jump, 15 feet 2 inches; triple jump, 32 feet 7 inches).

The last meet of the regular season is today, Friday, in Salisbury at 4 p.m. Decatur, James M. Bennett and Parkside are participating.
Decatur will then compete in the 3A South Section 2 championship on Thursday, June 10, at 3 p.m. in Salisbury. The 3A South Region championship is slated for Tuesday, June 15, at 4 p.m. at St. Charles High School in Waldorf.
“There will still be a region meet as in years’ past, but athletes must qualify for the region meet through the section meet (new this year),” Stigler said.
Four athletes in the section meet will qualify for the region meet and two athletes in each region will qualify for the state meet. This is a change from previous years when four athletes from each region qualified for the state meet, Stigler added.
“We are going to be working hard at practice and hopefully peaking in the next few weeks,” he said. “Everyone’s goal is to PR in all of the championship meets.”
