(April 12, 2019) The Worcester Prep boys’ lacrosse team bounced back after an 11-1 loss to the Parkside Rams on Monday with an 11-6 victory over the Gunston Day Herons, two days later.
“I don’t know what happened [against Parkside]. It was good to get that taste out of our mouths from Monday,” Prep Coach John Moeser said. “It was good to rebound from Monday.”
Worcester led 3-1 at the end of the first quarter on Wednesday. At halftime, the Mallards were on top, 8-3.
“We played well in the first half,” Moeser said.
Gunston scored three goals in the third quarter to cut Worcester’s advantage to two.
“We tend to lose focus for a period of time every game,” Moeser said. “We broke out of it in the fourth quarter. We dominated the fourth quarter.”
The Berlin squad netted three goals in the fourth quarter and held Gunston scoreless.
“They did a good job moving the ball offensively,” Moeser said. “They distributed the ball and were unselfish. Seven guys scored. [Our] defense always plays pretty stellar.”
Senior Jay Gosnear led Worcester with three goals and an assist. Senior captain Alec Dembeck chipped in with two goals and two assists. Sophomore John Arrington scored two goals.
Senior Owen Tunis, junior JP Issel, and sophomores Mason Brown and Brugh Moore netted one goal apiece. Brown also had two assists. Tunis had one.
Sophomore goalie Hunter Gentry stopped 11 Gunston shots.
“Hunter has been the one constant for us this season,” Moeser said. “He always makes a few pivotal saves every game.”
Worcester will host the Delmarva Christian Royals, today, Friday, at 3:30 pm. in Berlin. The Delmar Wildcats will come to Berlin on Monday for a 4 p.m. game against the Mallards.
