(Oct. 16, 2020) The Worcester Prep boys’ soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory over the Holly Grove Eagles on Wednesday in Berlin.
The game was played on the middle school field, because of standing water on the varsity field from Monday’s rain.
“It’s a smaller field. Our touches were a little sloppy. It wasn’t a great first half,” said Prep Coach Jon Adkins. “Playing on a different field threw us off. We love our field. We haven’t lost on our field since last September.”
The visiting Eagles scored first, about 13 minutes into the game. The Mallards answered, about six minutes later. Sophomore Logan Ginnavan scored off a junior captain Brice Richins pass.
During the halftime break, the players discussed how they took Holly Grove a little too lightly in the first half, and if they played better in the second half they should come away with the victory, Adkins said.
“They knew what they had to do,” he said.
With about 12 minutes remaining in the game, freshman Dylan McGovern’s shot from about 20 yards out found the back of the net.
“Holly Grove was a very tough opponent. We played better in the second half,” Adkins said. “We’re definitely a second-half team. It’s been our story all season.”
Prep goalie Jack Gardner, a sophomore, stopped eight Holly Grove shots.
“We have a young team. We’re learning,” Adkins said. “We responded and we got the ‘W.’”
Worcester will host the Delmarva Christian Royals on Friday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. in Berlin. The Prep squad’s two seniors – captain Ibby Khan and Vishnu Mohan – will be recognized.
